Nurses Week is May 6, through May 12. Every year, the heads of the nursing staff get together to show appreciation to their nurses.
"Sometimes it's just sundaes and ice cream and sometimes it is bigger," Sally McCluskey RN, Nurse Manager of Medical Surgical, said.
According to McClusky, this is the first year that nurses week has been celebrated separate from hospital week. The main focus is to celebrate nursing and the care that is provided through this field.
The celebration included ice cream sundaes and tables set up with pictures of nurses and nurse memorabilia. Some of the items included the white nurses cap, needles and the lanterns that they received when they graduated.
"The main purpose is to provide good patient care. That's what we provide through all the different avenues of nursing," McCluskey said.
Tabatha Goldthread also played a big part in helping set up for nurses week. It took several weeks to get all the stuff together and about a day to put it up for the celebration, according to McCluskey.
One of the nurses attending the celebration was Robin Rainey, who is a third generation nurse. She is a LVN at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
"The main focus of nurses week is to show the depth of nursing. Show people where it's been and where it's going," McCluskey said. "Things are changing and there are alot of advancements happening."
